Swedish Massage

Swedish massage has been used for centuries as an instinctive way to relieve muscle tension and to relax the body and mind.  As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. But Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, decreasing muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility while easing tension.

A study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and published in The New York Times, found that volunteers who received a 60 minute Swedish massage experienced significant decreases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as arginine vasopressin-a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. Volunteers also had increases in the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are part of the immune system, and a boost in the immune cells that may help fight colds and the flu.

Swedish Massage Techniques

Additional Swedish massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion-like tapping, bending and stretching. Before and during your Swedish massage session, communication is encouraged with your professional massage therapist so that your massage is customized to your specific needs.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and pressure to ease and release tension deep in your muscles. Similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments

This massage helps to refresh and relax muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow around your body. This gets rid of toxins in very sore and strained muscles, which helps them to strengthen and heal.

Deep tissue massage is often used to treat people who are recovering from accidents, and for sports injuries as it increases blood circulation in muscles that are underused, relieves chronic muscle tension throughout the body, and can also break down scar tissue and "knots" deep in the muscles. Trigger point techniques will also be used once your muscles have been warmed up

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy is an ancient therapeutic treatment that aims to relieve stress and enhance psychological and physical wellbeing, using  plant oils, known as essential oils.

Aromatherapy oils are pure essences extracted or distilled from plants. Flowers, fruit, bark, leaves, roots, resins and seeds of many herbs, shrubs and trees are used to produce aromatic oils, each with their own unique combination of healing properties. Some oils are used for their regulating effects on the nervous and hormonal systems, and some for their beneficial effects on the functioning of bodily systems. Some oils have, for example, a powerful antiseptic action, while others act as natural painkillers.

Oil blends and applications are designed to treat the whole person by supporting our bodies’ natural ability to balance, heal and maintain themselves.

Regular aromatherapy treatments can help to strengthen our immune systems, assisting in prevention, rather than the cure, of ill-health.

The aromatic molecules in essential oils are so tiny that they easily pass through the skin into the bloodstream, which circulates them throughout the body. Whilst the most common means of applying the oils to the skin is through massage – using a few drops of essential oils mixed in a ‘carrier’ oil such as sweet almond, grape seed or sunflower – they are also used in compresses for some conditions, or added to baths. Because they are highly concentrated, only a small quantity of essential oil is required to be effective.

The molecules are also administered through inhalation. They are inhaled through the nose and transmitted to the part of the brain which influences the nervous and hormonal systems, and which is connected to higher functions such as memory and emotional behaviour.

Aromatherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of individuals and problems, including:-

-Relieving pain in muscles and joints

· Relaxing muscles

· Stimulating the immune system

· Improving circulation

· Triggering the release of neurochemicals which have a relaxing, sedative, or    stimulating effect has been found to be particularly helpful in stress-related symptoms such as

· Skin problems

· Poor digestion

· Disturbed sleep

· Low energy

· Anxiety

Aromatherapy can help to release physical, mental and emotional stress (or dis-ease).

Acute stress sometimes manifests in hyperventilation leading to conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, panic attacks, mood swings, nervousness and anxiety.

The deep relaxation that aromatherapy offers, can help to regulate the breathing process, assisting the nervous and hormonal systems to return the body to its ideal state, known as “homeostasis”.

An aromatherapy treatment with a qualified and experienced practitioner is a real tonic to the system, helping you to sleep peacefully, increase your vitality and boost your immune system

Pregnancy Massage

Studies show that women who receive regular massages have fewer complications during their pregnancy and labour, and that their babies are more settled and content. Although pregnancy is a wonderful magical time many changes take place in the mothers body as the baby develops. This can put strain and pressure on the joints, ligaments and organs causing some pain and discomfort which massage can help alleviate. In addition massage also greatly benefits the baby as endorphin's (feel good chemicals) are releases by the mother during the massage and passed to the baby. The stimulating effects of the massage strokes help to increase circulation, which will increase the flow of nutrients delivered to the baby via the placenta. Massage aids the lymphatic system by stimulating the white blood cells of the immune system, encouraging the elimination of waste and toxins, which will help relieve odema. Another benefit of receiving regular massage during pregnancy is that the mother can be more aware of her own body, with the increased ability to relax during the first stage of labour. This often results in shorter, easier ans less painful births and a lower ratio of post natal complications. Further more, breast feeding is often successful due to the increase of prolactin and mammary development. Pregnancy truly is a magical journey. It is a time to be gentle with yourself and to get to know your new body and baby, a time to relax and enjoy. You are doing an amazing job growing a new little life. My pregnancy massage is gentle and comforting and it connects the mother and baby through the power of touch, working with two heartbeats as one

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage has to be one of the most enjoyable and relaxing massages available. For hundreds of years, hot stone massage has been used by many different cultures and modern day therapists apply the same massage techniques designed to work on muscle tension at the deepest level. During the Hot Stone massage treatment, smooth basaltic (volcanic) stones that have been heated in water are used in two ways; some stones are wrapped in towels and placed on specific energy centres known as chakras, along the body to align and re-balance the body's natural energy flow, whilst other stones are used to perform the massage. The heat of the stones penetrates deep into the muscle tissue allowing the muscles to relax 4-5 times quicker than in standard body massage, easing muscle tension and revitalising the muscle tissue by increasing blood circulation. The deep relaxation and increased blood flow to the areas being treated not only accelerates any healing process but also creates a state of deep mental relaxation

Fibromyalgia Massage

Fibromyalgia can have have an impact on your entire body, causing ongoing problems in the muscles and joints, which is why sufferers choose to incorporate massage as a natural pain management technique. A massage can relax your muscles and loosen your joints, so can be very effective in alleviating the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia.

How massage can help people with fibromyalgia:

* Massage can act as a natural TENS machine between the point of pain and our brain, therefore helping to reduce the severity of pain we feel.

* Massage can also create a sense of relaxation, which in turn can help people to have a deep and relaxing sleep. This is often vitally missing for people with fibromyalgia.

* Sleep is vital for numerous reasons, but one worth noting for people with FMS is that in a deep stage of sleep, our muscles repair, relax and renew their energy. By encouraging this deeper level of sleep and relaxation, massage can encourage muscles to heal, also helping clients to end the vicious cycle of sleep depravation.

* Massage helps the body’s lymphatic drainage system. This is particularly helpful for people with FMS whose mobility may have been affected by the condition and who have water retention as a result.

* Massage therapy can help to relax muscles that may have tensed through prolonged pain or spasms.

Kinesiology Taping

(add-on treatment)

Kinesiology taping is a rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. Kinesiology tape provides a latex-free long wearing tape designed to extend soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting. The tape used is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions. By targeting different receptors within the somatosensory system, kinesiology tape alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting effect forms convolutions in the skin thus increasing interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation of the affected areas.

The kinesiology tape can be applied in hundreds of ways and has the ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, reduce pain and inflammation, enhance performance, prevent injury and promote good circulation and healing, and assist in returning the body to homeostasis.

Common Applications Include...

Natural Face Lift Massage

Natural Face Lift Massage is a gentle non-intrusive approach to looking younger. Although ageing is a natural process, this therapy may help delay the visible signs of ageing and prevent further damage in the future by means of simple, natural and effective massage techniques and energy balancing to make the most of the assets you possess. It successfully combines ancient theory with a practical, modern approach.

Tensions can very easily build up in our facial muscles without us realising it. Over a period of time, habitual thoughts and emotions can lock themselves into expressions on our faces- particularly around the eyes and mouth. This can be exacerbated by additional factors such as sunlight, pollution, alcohol, poor diet, lack of sleep, the effects of gravity and every day stresses and strains. Under such conditions muscles can actually "dry up" and contract, inhibiting freedom of expression. This can encourage ageing and the formation of wrinkles as the face loses its muscle tone and elasticity

Natural Face Life Massage can relieve tension in areas you had no idea were tense. Energy balancing techniques bring a deep feeling of relaxation to the whole body and the noticeable effects can quickly be seen on the face

During the treatment over ninety face and neck muscles are systematically massaged. Acupressure points are activated, stimulating energy flow and releasing deep-seated tension, freeing layers of muscle and connective tissue. Ayurvedic smoothing techniques are used so that circulation and elimination are improved and the tissues can glide smoothly over the deeper layers of muscle and bone. The whole process has been described as a bit like ironing out the creases, making the skin feel smoother and softer and improving the complexion and skin tone

Reflexology is a natural holistic therapy based on the discovery that different areas of the feet correspond to organs, systems and structures within the entire body. Gentle pressure is applied to the feet to bring about a state of relaxation and to stimulate the body's own healing process. By applying pressure and using massage to stimulate these reflex areas, I am able to detect subtle changes in specific points or zones and clear congestion allowing the flow of energy to be restored and encouraging the body to heal from within. Reflexology produces a deep state of relaxation and can be used as a treatment and prevention for a wide range of illnesses and complaints including; stress, depression, respiratory problems, IBS and digestive disorders, headaches, migraines, menstrual problems and back and neck problems, to name but a few.

Reflexology can also be beneficial when trying to conceive and when labour begins.

You need not worry about the appearance of your feet. In fact, it helps me to understand more about your current health and well being. The manipulation of your feet is not ticklish and is usually  very pleasant and extremely relaxing. Acupressure Facial

Including temporary ear seed placement to prolong the benefits of your treatment

I have been a fully qualified acupressurist for over 20 years and within this time I have seen many clients benefit from this ancient Chinese medicine. From fatigue to insomnia, headaches to tinnitus, acupressure techniques can alleviate multiple ailments while improving the texture, tone and glow of your skin.

This treatment combines all the benefits of a rejuvenating facial along with shoulder, neck, facial and auricular (ear) acupressure massage. To enable you to prolong your treatment at home and to gain maximum results, small ear seeds will be placed over the auricular acu points and I will advise you to apply pressure in a unique pattern over the next few days

According to Chinese Medicine, balance and harmony in the body is maintained by qi energy flowing through the body’s meridians between the organs. Your organs help to promote health and vitality in the body. When the body’s meridians are stimulated using acupressure, the flow of qi can be adjusted and directed to specific parts of the body.

My acupressure facial treatment stimulates the facial acupressure points, which can help to improve skin tone, increase blood circulation and promote a healthy metabolism in the skin. The result is healthy, smooth and glowing skin, which is both relieved of congestion, and relaxed. Facial acupressure addresses the face from within to create a glowing exterior. This includes helping to tone the facial muscles, balancing the energy flow, encouraging general wellness and stimulating circulation. As many of the body’s meridians run through the face, acupressure facial treatment can dramatically improve the health and aesthetic of the face.

Hopi Ear Candling

Thermo auricular therapy, also known as Hopi Ear Candles, are an ancient and natural therapy used to regulate pressure in the sinuses, stimulate the lymphatic system and clear away toxins. The Hopi Ear Candles are inserted into the ear and a lit flame creates a gentle suction which safely draws out impurities from the inner ear. Hopi Ear Candles can also aid the treatment of conditions such as tinnitus, excessive ear wax, sinus conditions, headaches, stress and sleeping difficulties. Many clients report a state of complete mental, psychical and emotional relaxation. Ear candles are not like wax candles at all, they are hollow, made from cotton flax, stiffened by bees wax and infuse with therapeutic herbs and oils such as chamomile and sage. This calming treatment finishes with a relaxing aromatherapy pressure point massage to the face, scalp, neck, arms and shoulders

All the benefits of acupuncture without the needles

What is Acupressure?

The role of acupressure has been paramount in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for more than 2000 years, and the fact that it is still in use today is a testimony to its effectiveness in the treatment of illness and pain. Acupressure is essentially a method of sending a signal to the body (by needle or other means) to “turn on” its own self-healing or regulatory mechanisms. Normally, Qi (vital energy) circulates through natural pathways in the body called meridians. Blockage of this flow or an imbalance in Yin and Yang can cause illness and pain. Acupressure helps to correct functional imbalances and restore the flow thus returning the body to a more natural state of well-being.

Acupressure is an effective form of stimulation used to help relax the muscles. If done regularly, this method of massage can sustain improvement and minimize recurrence of symptoms

Cupping is an ancient technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to stimulate acupressure points or larger areas of the body. It is often practiced alongside Acupressure and massage but can also be a 'stand-alone' treatment.

The technique involves creating a vacuum inside round glass or plastic cups by inserting a naked flame and removing it, or sucking out air mechanically.

The cups are then left in place for anything up to 20 minutes.

If large areas of the body need treating, a technique known as 'sliding cupping' is used. A thin layer of massage oil is spread over the skin; the cups are placed onto the body in the normal way and then slid along the muscles being treated.

This treatment is often compared to deep tissue massage.

Cupping is not painful but can leave slightly red patches on the skin, like circular bruises (or hearts if you choose the heart cups) Although these marks resemble bruises, the muscles have not been traumatised in any way. The redness on the skin indicates that there has been movement in the circulation of blood under and around the cups. Not all cupping treatments will result in redness as this depends on the complaint being addressed.

We like to think of cupping as the reverse of a deep tissue massage - where tissue is lifted rather than compressed - making it ideal for people who cannot tolerate deep tissue massage.

Meridian Psychotherapy

(EFT-Emotional Freedom Technique)

Meridian Psychotherapy comprises a fast growing family of techniques that provide quick and usually permanent relief from negative emotional states. It has its roots in both psychology and ancient healing sciences, and combines ‘talking therapy’ with energy techniques that work on the same meridians as those used in acupuncture/acupressure to release the underlying disturbances and restore the free flow of life energy to the body/mind.

Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is an alternative treatment for physical pain and emotional distress. It’s also referred to as tapping or psychological acupressure.

According to its developer, Gary Craig, a disruption in energy is the cause of all negative emotions and pain. EFT tapping has been used to treat people with anxiety and people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How does EFT tapping work?

Similar to acupuncture and acupressure EFT focuses on the meridian points — or energy hot spots — to restore balance to your body’s energy.

It’s believed that restoring this energy balance can relieve symptoms or a negative experience

Based on Chinese medicine, meridian points are thought of as areas of the body energy flows through. These pathways help balance energy flow to maintain your health. Any imbalance can influence disease or sickness.

Acupuncture uses needles to apply pressure to these energy points. EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure.

Proponents say the tapping helps you access your body’s energy and send signals to the part of the brain that controls stress. stimulating the meridian points through EFT tapping can reduce the stress or negative emotion you feel from your issue, ultimately restoring balance to your disrupted energy.
